LOGIX

Welcome to SA Studbook

The purpose of SASmallstock.com is to provide users with a functional and efficient search and comparison facility for smallstock animals based on genetic evaluations. Genetic merit is based on the South African genetic evaluation and the information and data supplied through SA Stud Book’s genetic services.

Welcome to Logix

The Logix system is a collection of databases and programs that addresses the needs for animal recording for a wide spectrum of stakeholders in the livestock industry.

  • Production data from the farm converted into useful and functional management information.
  • Allows breeders to focus on data and reports that prioritize goals specific to their flock.
  •  World-class research and development capacity: our researchers are registered at SANASP, which ensures that you receive professional and scientific services.
  •  International cooperation with other world leaders in the field of breeding and genomic selection.
  • Collaborating with the University of Pretoria and other universities and research institutions.
  •  Specialized courses and training where the most recent information and technology are directly introduced to farmers.

LOGIX Animal Recording Services

The LOGIX system is a collection of databases and programs that addresses the needs for animal recording for a wide spectrum of stakeholders in the livestock industry.

Animal recording made easy:

  • Production data from the farm and animals are converted to useful and functional management information reports.
  • Farming programs can exchange data directly with LOGIX.
  • Availability of data that focuses on every herd’s/ flock’s unique needs.
  • The genetic merit of the herd/flock and individual animals of the herd/flock are summarised in genetic reports available on Logix.
  • Continuous developments and enhancements for a dynamic and modern system.

We make a difference

  • All recording services and reports are done and kept in one organization.
  • World-class research and development capacity: Our researchers are registered at SACNASP. It ensures that you receive professional and scientific services.
  • International cooperation with other world leaders in the field of breeding and genomic selection.
  • Collaborating with the University of Pretoria and other universities and research institutions.
  • Specialized courses and training where the most recent information and technology are directly introduced to farmers.

Dorper

The aim of LOGIX Small Stock is the holistic genetic improvement of economic production traits, while maintaining breed standards. The most significant trait to be improved is the net production rate within natural production environments. Shortening the production cycle while maintaining carcass quality is also important. These traits have to be improved in animals with the desired conformation which conform to breed standards.

Data Requirements

REQUIRED DATA COLLECTION

  • Birth notification and  lambing data : Lambing data recorded by breeders are used to evaluate fertility. Births are recorded, as well as ease of lambing, number  of lambs born alive and dead, and abortions.
  • Weaning weights (between 80 – 150 days – compulsory): Weaning weights are used to calculate the growth rate of lambs, as well as the mothering ability and efficiency of ewes. All the weaning weights of the lambs of a ewe are used to calculate the total weight weaned per ewe per production year. This measurement thus takes into account the quality of lambs as well.

OPTIONAL (but encouraged) DATA COLLECTION

  • Mating lists: (optional) Matings, embryo flushing and AI information are recorded.
  • Birth weights: (optional) Recorded as near as, but within 7 days after birth.
  • Pre-weaning weights: (between 25 –80 days – optional)
  • Post-weaning weight: (between 150 – 365 days – optional)
  • Mature weight: (from 365 days – optional). These weights are optional and are used to evaluate post-weaning growth rate, as well as the adaptability of young animals.
  • Traits measured on the ewe flock include: Total weight of lambs weaned /year (kg); Fertility (Ewe lambed of not); Multiple births (Number of lambs born / year); Lamb survival (Number of lambs weaned / year); Total weight of lambs born / productive years (kg) and Total weight of lambs weaned / productive years (kg).
  • Loin Eye ultrasound data (optional)
  • Genomic testing (optional)

Requirements for participation in LOGIX

Stud and commercial producers benefit from participation in production measurement. All animals should be identified and the recording of births and parentages are important, without which genetic evaluation is not possible and it is not possible to manage and select animals efficiently. A reliable sheep scale and basic handling facilities are needed for measurements.

Management reports

  • Reproduction reports – Ewe and Ram Progeny Summaries.
  • Pedigree reports: Three generation with production information, Five-generation reports.
  • Production reports per test: Outputs of processed measurements, fertility summaries, group reports, ram growth test results.
  • Reports containing genetic information on the flock and individual animals. Breeding values (EBV) for maternal and meat traits, as well as genetic trends.
  • Flock genetic reports.
  • Breed averages.
